Whether it’s the various school sanctioned events or the crucial sports games being played, Homecoming Week is always one to look forward too. For this year’s Homecoming game, Manitou Springs High School played Englewood. During practice in the previous week, players prepared mentally and physically for one of their most important games scheduled this season.

To start the game, Jake Haas (11) kicked the ball out of the end zone for a touchback. As the game progressed, Manitou opened up the scoring with 7-0 and progressed to keep a 21-6 lead at the end of the first half. The Mustangs headed into the locker room with their heads held high. As they team reentered the field they began to stretch and prepare for the final two quarters.

In the the third quarter, though, the struggling and frustrated Englewood Pirates tried to get in the heads of the players, including starting quarterback Cole Sienknecht (12), who had to leave for the remainder of the game due to an injury. Through all this, the Mustangs were able to put up six more points while also holding Englewood to six points as well.

After the game, Manitou evened their record to 2-2 and Englewood dropped to 2-2. This game was a good learning point for the Mustangs, as they learned they can keep up consistent play for the entire 48 minutes, as well as keeping their heads in tough situations. Manitou will continue their season with a trip to Lamar on Friday, September 29.
