As I was walking into 3A study hall, I realized I didn’t have a topic to write my creative writing story about. The room was loud, I was hearing sounds of laughter, students talking, TikToks, food wrappers crinkling, chairs scuffing, and my own bag landing on the floor near my desk. As the bell rang, I opened up Canvas to read about this assignment. The writing prompt read, “Write about a non fiction story that is a part of your regular school day.” The prompt went on to explain how I could be the protagonist or not. I sat at my desk drinking my raspberry Olli Pop. I bought it at Safeway with Bri and Cali during lunch. I opened up my creative writing pink folder, filled with every paper from this year. I was looking at the papers and hoping for some inspiration. I was at a loss, so I switched gears and got out my US History folder. I pulled out my Great Gatsby Question and Answer sheet.
I quickly became distracted when I overheard, “I get to go see Zach Bryan in concert this summer!” said Sariah to Gannon!
“Oh! I will be going to his concert, too!” I added to their conversation.
“He’s here for two days,” said Sariah. “Which day are you going to, Lauren?”
“I honestly don’t remember which day I am going to,” I said. I realized I had gotten distracted. I told them both “Ah! I have to do my Great Gatsby worksheet. I have so many questions left,” I said frantically.
“Oh! I did that yesterday!” said Sariah.
“Ugh, somebody snitched, and we had to change the movie!” said Gannon.
“Aww literally, that movie looked so good!” I said.
“Oh! Is that why the assignment disappeared?” said Sariah.
“He told us if we did the worksheet he would give us extra credit,” I said.
We all focused back into what we were working on. I went back to answer my history questions. I kept working on my sheet until I got up to ask Mr. Williams if I could go get some water.
As I was walking up I said, “Can I go get some water please?”
“Umm, for a dollar,” Mr. Williams said.
I laughed as he handed me a hall pass. I continued out the door. I took a left and passed a bulletin board showing the seniors’ college choices. I noticed kids in the media center frantically searching for their choice book for their AP Lang research project. I kept walking, I tripped on my Uggs, and heard a Kahoot playing coming from Mr. Mack’s room. As I made it to the water fountain, I filled my water bottle, and I heard music playing in the gym for a PE class. I head back towards Study Hall, it’s quieter except for Rihanna’s “Wheerrreee have yooouuu been, all my li-life…”
I stop and turn back into the study hall room I came from. I see my classmates on their computers, some working, some are scrolling Canvas, and some are trying to look busy. I put the hall pass back on Mr. Williams desk right next to the iPad, and I find my way back to my seat. As I am sitting down, Kaleb on my left, turns to me and says, “Lauren, have you figured out what you’re going to write your creative writing story on yet?”
“Ah, not yet! I’m honestly not sure what to write my story on, I feel like nothing
super crazy happens throughout my day haha!” I said.
“Haha! No, me too, I feel the same way! I feel like we would need Mr. Williams to get on his desk and start dancing haha!” said Kaleb.
We both laughed and were lost about what to write a creative story about. Just as I’m turning back into my seat, I see out of the
corner in my eye, Mr. Williams get up onto his desk and he’s dancing. He’s dancing on his desk! We all started laughing.
“I heard you guys haha!” said Mr. Williams.
As I turn back into my seat I’m still wondering what to write my story on, but as I’m watching the time tick away and my classmates packing up all their stuff I think to myself– I know what I’m going to write my creative story on!
