As we head into the holiday season, we should be thankful for what we have and the things that make our lives special. Even though it’s hard to only be focused on the things we have and the things we can do to show our appreciation for those in our immediate circle, kindness doesn’t have to be limited to those in our personal lives.
The holiday season is for showing kindness and love to those all around us in our communities. Our teachers, our community leaders, and those we might not even know, those who are usually left forgotten. In many ways to remember those people is kind of hard, as the holiday season brings up stress for many and a focus on completing tasks before Thanksgiving and Christmas; when we get caught up in our immediate surroundings and lives, we overlook certain things. Especially in a close community like Manitou, it is vital that everyone is seen. To create an impact is to help those around you and show them that you care.
With Christmas quickly approaching there are many ways you can show up for the people around you. No act of kindness is too small and know that in whatever way you show up for others, the impact is meaningful and powerful.
In our school, one way you can show up is to take a gift off the Angel Tree and bring it back for someone else. Even though the items requested on the tree are necessities and don’t seem like fun gifts, they will have a significant impact on somebody’s life. Things like socks and shirts give someone something important and greatly appreciated.
On a larger scale, many businesses in Manitou and Colorado Springs offer similar programs to give to others. If you would like to participate you can look at The Salvation Army and many churches in the area who often host these charitable acts. To be in contact with these organizations you can call ahead of time or show up with items to donate.
If time is not something you have, there are other quick ways to contribute meaningfully to your community that can be done in much smaller ways that still are equally impactful. For those in a smaller community it might be hard to ask for help from others and it might be more difficult to provide for families in the holiday season.
Our school currently is hosting a clothing drive that fills backpacks full of clothing and essentials for the homeless. It is run by Elizabeth Guess, a member of the Manitou community. To help the cause, bring in clean and preferably new clothing. These essentials are important and so meaningful. If you don’t have the money to buy these things for others, just look through your closet. Look for something you don’t wear a lot or could provide use for someone else. This also works for other causes such as donating to homeless shelters, second hand stores, or many other places with similar goals.
Making an impact doesn’t have to be complicated; it can be simple and direct. If you know someone is struggling or could just use a friend, showing up and listening is a way to support and make a difference in their life. At school, on your team, and anybody who you have a connection with this is applicable. Remember those who make an impact in your life: your coaches, teachers, instructors, and coworkers. These people impact you and taking the time to recognize them ensures that the feeling of care is mutual.
This weekend the Manitou Arts Fair runs from 10-2pm. This is a great opportunity to purchase small gifts to give to those special people. The artists there have worked hard to make these items and your contribution will be greatly appreciated making a meaningful impact on them and whoever you give these gifts to.
Even a note telling someone your appreciation for all they do goes a long way, it shows you see what they do for you and you’re grateful. It acknowledges and makes them feel seen. As always the holidays are a time for family and friends; and sometimes we forget even the simplest thing to say, “Thank you,” “I love you,” and “I appreciate you.” If anything, basic manners make a difference and can lift someone’s spirits.
The holiday season is a time that should bring out the kindness in all of us and you can make a difference in many different ways. Remember that everyone could use a little kindness.
