The Crochet Club, which meets every Friday during lunch in Angela Shelton’s classroom, conducted their first ever meeting on Sept. 6. Over 25 people signed up for the Crochet Club during the Club Fair, and most of them attended the first meeting.
Crocheting is a form of art that involves creating things out of different types of yarn or thread and a hook. People make all sorts of things from dinosaur plushies to hats. According to Shelton, who also teaches French, crocheting derives from the French word “crochet” which means “small hook”.
Kaitlyn Norfleet (12) is a member of the club and fairly new to crocheting. She had heard of crocheting before but never took the chance to try it thinking it would be too hard. “Now that there’s a club, I would like to join it and try to learn the basics,” Norfleet said.
She is hoping to be in the Crochet Club as long as possible to have fun and enjoy it, but still come out with a new skill. “I want to learn the basics,” Norfleet said, “and then maybe make a little plushy and a sort of key chain I can put on my backpack.”
Shelton has high hopes about the club and the creations that will be made. “It’s just really fun to see people’s ideas in action,” she said.
There are a few more experienced crocheters in the club that are already making progress on some great creations.
Those who are new to crocheting will have help from the more experienced crocheters like Cora Lengerich(10). Lengrich is willing to help teach the members who need it. “There’s tutorial videos and in person teaching on how to start with the basics,” Lengerich said.
Lengerich has been crocheting for about five years now. “I found videos of people crocheting on YouTube, and I had friends who could crochet,” she said.
Lengerich got the idea to make the club with one of her friends, Maddie Pemberton(10), and Shelton.
Lengerich does not know how many people will show up to the club every day but more new people are showing up every day to learn and create new ideas, “I would like it to last like as long as it can,” Lengerich said.
They would like the club to make their own mini projects, but most of the people who signed up are beginners who do not know much about crocheting but are eager to learn. “I think other people would like to learn how to crochet and have fun crocheting,” Lengerich said.
