At the end of the 24-25 school year, MSHS will be moving and remodeling the weight room. Many students and staff are excited for this new addition to the school.
Anna Conrad, the principal at MSHS, stated that the weight room is being moved to where all the World Language classrooms are to make the weight room ADA compliant. “It’s not accessible for kids that are in wheelchairs, so based on the American Disabilities Act, we had to find a new spot for it to be accessible to every student inside of the school,” Conrad said.
Brandon DeMatto, an athletics teacher at MSHS, believes that this addition to the school will create a better space for students who request athletic conditioning. “Considering that athletic conditioning is the highest requested class, year in and year out, making sure that it’s a great space for a lot of kids that are requesting it is important,” DeMatto said.

Construction for the weight room is set to start right after students are done with school. “On May 23, construction will start and continue throughout the course of the summer, and our best hope is that it will be ready by the time that we all return to school in August,” Conrad said.
Since the old weight room does not fit the ADA requirements, it can’t be used by students so the school is still trying to figure out what to do with the extra space. “Nothing has been decided just yet, but it cannot be used as a classroom space just because not every student is going to be able to access that,” DeMatto said, “so there’s potential for storage.”
In addition to the new weight room being built, there will be other changes over the summer to fit the ADA requirements. “Another update would be changes within some of the bathrooms,” Conrad said. “Shifting some of the toilets and or sinks to be in different spaces again, to be within that ADA compliance.”
Ella Cuddihy, a sophmore and student athlete at MSHS is excited for the added space. “I feel like the added space will be really nice, and I can’t wait to see the new changes next year,” Cuddihy said.
DeMatto believes that this is a great opportunity for students to be able to do their best. “I think it’s a really really great opportunity for us to put our best effort forward,” DeMatto said.
