“The Conjuring: Last Rites” is a newly released movie series finale directed by Michael Chaves. This movie is about the case that ended Ed and Lorraine Warren’s paranormal investigations, the case in the movie is based off of a true story about the Smurl family’s paranormal experiences.
The plot of the movie is mostly about Ed and Lorraine’s daughter, Judy, and how she has the same psychic abilities as her mother. If you’re a conjuring fan, I think that you’d enjoy this movie and the way they incorporated Judy growing up and gave her a background unlike the other movies where she was mostly just a side character.
I thought that the story was reasonable, but it was definitely a different feel from the other movies, which I personally really enjoyed. It wasn’t as suspenseful and realistic as the other movies which gave it more of a typical horror movie vibe; but if you’ve seen the other Conjuring movies, you can definitely tell that this one is different from the way the CGI/props are set up to the way the story was laid out. There were some parts that honestly were boring or didn’t necessarily make sense and not everything connected smoothly.
I thought that the CGI was pretty good, but sometimes it looked too realistic. I think it would have been better if they kept the props real instead of using the computer to make it. That’s what it looked like at least. I feel they overdid it at some points trying to make it scary, but I think the scariest thing about the movie is not knowing. I did enjoy that they had scenes where the character wouldn’t notice what was happening but the audience could see, although I didn’t like how they would keep the “spirits” on screen for a long period of time. That took away from the eeriness of suspecting what was gonna happen next.
The acting in the movie was a solid 8/10. I love that they have always kept the original actors Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson; I don’t think anyone else can deliver the performance that these two did and their chemistry is perfect on screen. When I think of Ed and Lorraine Warren, I think of these two and the amazing acting they’ve done throughout the years.
Overall, I give the movie 6/10. It wasn’t the worst movie I’ve seen but it wasn’t the best, after seeing all of the Conjuring movies including The Annabelle and Nun movies. It was a pretty decent ending, giving their daughter some background. However, in real life the Smurl’s family was not the last case Ed and Lorraine did. They continued to do investigations until Ed passed away from complications of a stroke on Aug. 23, 2006. Lorraine retired from investigations and remained a consultant for the New England Society for Psychic Research until she passed away on April 18, 2019, living until she was 92. Although they cut the series short compared to their real lives they did a good job showing the basis of what Ed and Lorraine did and a bit of what Judy’s life came to be.

I think that this is a great review because it expresses the positives and negatives of the movie and even though you didn’t think it was the best it definitely persuaded me to watch The Conjuring movies. I also think that new horror movies recently have been using a lot more computer work to make it more realistic but it ends up being too realistic to the point where it doesn’t even look real anymore. It interested me more the fact that it is based on true stories.
