After the splendid success that was West Side Story, last year’s spring musical, anticipation for this year’s promising production of The Music Man is growing. As the early February auditions roll around, here’s what any ambitious cast member-candidate needs to know.

  • The Monologue Audition

Monologues should be approximately one minute in length and memorized. Since the musical itself is a comedy, comedic monologues are preferred. Search online for a well-written one that you feel showcases your abilities best, or ask Wendy Harms for a monologue selection book to peruse. You are allowed to hold your monologue on stage with you, but only in a printed form. iPads and phones are not allowed to be read off of.

  • The Singing Audition

Of the options provided, song selections should be made based on whatever song exhibits your singing range the most. Of that song, pick out sixteen bars to perform. A piano accompaniment will be offered at auditions.
Female choices:

“Bye Bye Birdie” from Bye Bye Birdie

“Matchmaker” from Fiddler on the Roof

“In My Own Little Corner” from Cinderella the Musical

“If I Loved You” from Carousel

Male choices:

“I Got Rhythm” from Crazy for You

“The Impossible Dream” from Man of La Mancha

“Mr. Cellophane” from Chicago

“Put on a Happy Face” from Bye Bye Birdie
Sheet music for each song will soon be available on the Drama Club board.

  • The Dance Audition

Actors will perform a male-female partner dance to “Shipoopi” from The Music Man. The dance will be taught at auditions, but a video tutorial is available for practicing ahead of time.

Email Mia Elliott ([email protected]) or Alison Lanning ([email protected]) if you have any questions.

An informational meeting for auditioning will be held February 8 after school in the SILC theatre lab.
Auditions will be held  on February 22 and 23 from 5:30 to 8:30.
