District 14 awarded by win on 3B
November 5, 2015
On November 3rd, Manitou voters in district 14 voted on a ballot. On the ballot was the Mill Levy Issue, regarded just as 3B.
Over the past couple of months, you may have seen people standing on corners holding signs or handing out buttons, someone may have also come to your door to convince your parents.
1,845 Manitou citizens voted yes on the issue, making it 59 percent for the uplift in taxes to help the schools. 1,308 people, 41 percent, voted no.
According to the Gazette, District 14 has been cut by 9 million dollars over the past 6 years, depleting the resources for the schools.
District 14’s budget for 2015-2016 is roughly 19 million. This includes food service, transportation, building etc. Of this, about 140,000 are federal sources, and 8,000,000 are state sources.
D-14 plans to use the extra money to increase salaries and maintain the campus. Without the money, the school district would have been forced to cut certain programs and let go teachers.
