“Haunt Sweet Home”, published on September 3, 2024, is a horror genre book by Sarah Pinsker. The story is pretty well built with great characters. I love the way Pinsker changed the perspectives from the normal story style to an interview style, but I feel like it wasn’t really a horror book and more of a family story about how they rig up houses to be haunted. Pinsker makes it have a scary setting here and there, but I don’t feel like she carries it through with the horror sense.
Pinsker did well on giving a good main character that is struggling in her life but is able to get a new start thanks to her wealthy cousin who runs a TV show.
On the other hand, Pinsker still made a great book with great point of view change and story plot. The way that the author is able to change the story from the narrative of the main character and the change to an interview style of Jeremy as he interviews the house owners about the haunting of their house for his reality tv show is a great addition to the story of the book.
This book has more of a family vibe than a horror one, which was pretty good. The whole family is a nice and quirky type and that was the reason she was able to get a job at her cousin’s reality show which was good.
One thing the book lacked was the scary setting. Although it had some scary moments here and there there were just not enough of them and that just did give the good enough of the scary feeling. This is a scary book, so I would suspect it makes more scary sense because it’s the whole hook of the story, but Pinsker failed to deliver on that.
Overall, Pinsker was able to make a good book and I did love the ending. But I wasn’t really a fan due to there not being enough scares throughout the book, and I wished they would add more scares. I loved the characters and the way the book was written and would recommend it if you’re looking for a very short horror story.
