Review: Space Marine 2
“In the 41st millennium, there is only war.” This is the main quote for the franchise of Warhammer 40,000. Set in a grim dark future, humans fight off against aliens, interdimensional demons and the superhumans who protect humanity, “The Angels of Death”. The Space Marines. Space Marines are biologically and technologically enhanced humans that have trained their very long lives to fight the enemies of humanity. In the game Space Marine Two you(the player) follow Lieutenant Demitrian Titus or just Titus for short after the first Space Marine game set 200 years before the sequel. Titus is sent to the planet Kadaku to fight the alien bugs known as the Tyrannids.
CGI: 9/10
The CGI of this game is phenomenal. Every little detail is just perfect from the smoothness of game play to the sheer number of bugs heading towards you. So many little things fill up the screen every single frame of the game is a work of art by itself although sometimes the playable characters will just hover towards the enemy. Besides that the CGI is amazing, especially the cinematic scenes.
Story/Campaign Mode: 8/10
The story was great. I loved the characters, both the villains and the heroes. The only negative thing I can think of is that the story mode felt short. I wish there was more of it or if there were side missions in the campaign. The story was so enjoyable, it felt almost wrong that I only finished it in three to four days. Besides wanting more story out of the story again it was great. Also an amazing plot twist at the end if you have played/heard the story of the last game.
Operations Mode: 7.5/10
Operations Mode is very enjoyable. Customizing your own Space Marine either being lore accurate with chapters. Or just making your own concoction of colors known to the games community as “Crayon Marines”. You can specialize in six different classes and play with two additional friends (you can also play campaign mode and eternal war with friends as well). The only downside I would say is that there are only six missions you can play. These missions are fun but can get boring unless you get to harder difficulties which there are only six. This really brings the rating for this down because sometimes you are not leveled enough to play harder difficulties which means if you want a successful mission you’ll have to do the same difficulty that really bores you.
Eternal War: 4-9/10
In Eternal War you and five other players go against a team of 6 other players. You are either loyalist marines (the heroes in the game) or chaos marines (evil marines that follow the interdimensional demons). You still can choose from the 6 classes but you will start over level wise in the game. You have to unlock weapons to use them which can be difficult and there are no ranked matches so you might fight other players way out of your league. I have played Eternal War only once due to how hard it was for my team to win. From what I get from youtube videos Eternal War can either be super fun to play or can be filled with toxic players.
Lore Accuracy: 9/10
The game developers who made this are die hard warhammer 40k fans. So they want to get as much accuracy as possible in possibly the best warhammer game but probably a contender for game of the year award. I have heard online that a certain enemy of the game (I will not spoil) is smaller than the model on the board game. In the game this unit is the size of a human but on the tabletop is the size of a space marine (which can be from 7 to 8 ft tall). Besides these small things that the fans have graciously forgiven the game is very lore driven but still enjoyable for people who do not know warhammer lore.
In Game Fighting: 10/10
The fighting in the game is so much fun it gets the blood flowing. Depending on your class you get certain weapons and abilities (unless you’re playing story mode in which you can use any weapon if you find it and unlock it). The fighting in the game is confusing at first due to it being a mix of a “shooter” and a “rip and tear” fighting style but you will quickly get used to it. In the game when you perform an execution you get both an awesome kill and also shield (the amount varies on the kind of enemy and health is gained only by healing packs). Fighting the various enemies and especially the bosses is so much fun and it never Ever gets old shooting and ripping through the enemy hordes.
The Soundtrack: 9/10
Most of the time when I play a game, I have music or a podcast on in the background while I play because video game music isn’t really for me. But I did not play a single song while I played the campaign because the music was enjoyable. It is definitely not for everyone but it will definitely get your blood pumping while you slice and dice through the enemy.
Final score: 59/70
This game is amazing. I love almost everything about it. I am a Huge Warhammer 40,000 fan. This game has lived up to my expectations and the hype surrounding it. But the things I found lacking really took the quality of the game down. Despite this the game is still very enjoyable. Depending on what edition of the game you get of the game can determine how much the game costs but you will get very nice perks. The game costs around $69.99-$109.99 for any who want to get the game which I suggest you do. In conclusion This game is great and enjoyable but there are just a few things that kind of tank the overall score.
