The concept of a "Sadie Hawkins" day was introduced by cartoonist Al Capp in 1937 in his popular comic strip "Li'l Abner". The day was named after a supporting character and soon became an annual tradition in the plot of the comic, and was co-opted by colleges and high schools across the country.
