Mass Media Class Wins Awards for Outstanding Work
May 13, 2014
Four Mass Media students received highly esteemed awards from The Colorado High School Press Association (CHSPA) for their outstanding work on the Prospector. The organization works to enhance students’ interest in media, and hold award ceremonies every year for the best of the best. It is the an all-state competition and is one of the most highly-esteemed in the country.
There are 25 categories for the awards, including news feature, critical review, news feature photo and caption, photo essay, etc,.
Hannah Tooley (12) won 2 awards, coming in 3rd for her commentary on No Name Calling Week and an honorable mention for her critical review on Thoroughly A(muse)d.
Katelinn Root (11) received 2nd place for her photo essay on The National Honor Society Blood Drive for showing the positive outcome of students and the overall happiness they portrayed while giving blood.
Daisy Erickson won 2nd place for her environmental portrait on Ryan Carpenter, and also received 1st place for her photo/graphic illustration of the Girls Swim Team. Her portrayal of Ryan showed his true passion for the sport of wrestling, through his determined facial expression and the dozens of metals draped in front of him. The graphic illustration of the girls swim team was beyond brilliant, and showed each of their faces in a bubble.
Justina Nanfito won 2nd place for her new-feature photo and caption of the Zombie Run due to the outstanding quality of the photos and her well-organized slideshow.

Most of the time, the writers here on the Prospector do a pretty good job of writing articles. However, no one I know reads this except me. When I saw the Prospector app on my iPad that I couldn’t delete, that made me not want to ever open it. Especially because it wasn’t even an app, it was just a link to the website. Next, the Prospector’s social media sucks. The last post on your Facebook page was February 25 (which ironically had to do with pot). Take a look at KKTV’s Facebook page, for example. That is something that I would follow. Finally, I come check the Prospector at least once a week and rarely find new content. If you don’t add new articles you are sure to lose followers.
So, do I think these people were worthy of these awards? Yes. However, the person who runs social media and advertising for the Prospector needs a detention!

Hey Dylan,
I appreciate the comments you’ve been posting this year. I’m graduated now but I’ve loved your feedback on stories and how to improve upon our website.
Of course, there are plenty of things The Prospector could improve upon this upcoming year, and we need as much help as we can get. If you want to help make a difference, I’m sure they would love to have you on the staff next year! 🙂
Thanks,
Hannah T
