The Manitou Springs golf team is sending three of its members to state: Trevor Hunt, Drew Mendoza and Lucas Lichina. All three members are returning to state from last year where Hunt tied for 62nd, Lichina tied for 57th and Mendoza finished 75th.
“I am excited to come back and hopefully place better than last year,” Hunt said. According to Coach Ken Vecchio, Hunt has been the most consistent this season shooting an average of 77 in the 9 tournaments he has played in so far. Despite the boys’ success this season, Mendoza says it’s all about state. “ This is the main reason I play golf, and it’s my goal every year to get to this point.”
Mendoza is the youngest member on the team and is going to state for the second time in as many years.
Lichina, the only senior on the team, said “ I am motivated because this is my last year playing high school golf and I hope to end my career on a good note.”
When asked about his team and his expectations for state this year, Coach Vecchio said, “ Well, it’s gonna be a hard course and state is always more competitive than other tournaments… I just want them to play the best they can and don’t forget to have fun with it too.”
The team heads up to Denver on October 1st to finish their season.
